My name is Nicole Kelly, I am 22 years old I live in Secaucus N.J I’ve played soccer basketball and softball throughout my childhood. Soccer was always my favorite and I still play today in collage. At a very young age I was diagnosed with ADHD which nobody picked up on until 3rd grade because I didn’t have the hyper active part of it. It was that I just couldn’t focus. I’m also communication impaired. It takes longer for my brain to comprehend what I’m reading than other people can. I struggled in first and second grade with reading and comprehension. My teachers were wonderful, and along with my neurologist they were able to get me the proper help. I have been receiving special education services since third grade.
My years in elementary school were a bit of a struggle because I couldn’t comprehend what I was reading. My special education teacher Mrs. Bartletta was amazing and taught me in a way I understood. As I got older, I stared to develop a lot of anxiety. Going into high school my anxiety was so bad I didn’t want to go to school. My case manager Nancy Jaber spoke to me and discussed being in a small group class. My parents and I agreed it would be the best thing for me.
Though my high school years I became more confident in myself because of the help of my special ed teachers, I had. I could never thank them enough for all they did for me. I look back on all that I accomplished, like making the honor roll, and being a starter and captain on the varsity soccer team. My teachers never made me feel like I was in a special ed class.
Having the ability to read and write are essential for anyone in todays society. A person has to understand what they are seeing everywhere from street signs to grocery shopping. If you couldn’t understand I believe there would be total confusion in the world.
College brought on new challenges. I didn’t do very good on virtual classes, covid, pandemics and not being able to attend classes, caused My gpa to drop. when it fell between my soccer coach Tuesta and my adviser Hannah they were able to help me by staying on top of my situation and making me focus on my assignments through study hall. They did everything they could to make sure I passed and continued to play on the team.
This year in the fall I’m am going to be a senior in collage. I’ve changed my major this year to media arts. I was taking business management classes but realized that it wasn’t for me. I should be graduating this coming semester but due to covid I did not have enough credits. Some of my general ed classes had to be taken over. I thought that doing them in the summer would be good for me, so they weren’t added to my schedule during the fall semester.
Thanks for sharing and being so open!
